Recently a client of mine was very excited to try downloading music after getting high-speed internet. After several searches for unlimited music download services, she came across a site that was ranked #1 among several user review sites. For $14.99 a year, she could get unlimited free downloads to songs, movies, and more! Sound to good to be true?

More and more complaints have been issued against these types of music download service companies. My client was just another statistic in the practice of fraudulent music download services. When she signed in to her account for the first time, she was directed to several articles on how to burn CD's and websites such as Yahoo and Google where she could "search" for her own "free" music. She was also charged an additional $17.00 for spyware software that she didn't order.

We contacted the customer service department on behalf of the client. After being on hold a long while, we were forwarded to the manufacturer of the spyware program that she never agreed to ordering. Further investigation provided us with long lists of reports on this and similar websites offering unlimited "free" downloads. They were selling information that anyone could get for free, and the FTC was on to them.

While several cases are pending, there will never be a way to fully rid the cyber-world of these types of fraudulent service providers. What can you do to protect yourself? Here are some basic rules:

1. Do a little research. Check with online review forums that are reputable and well-known. Don't respond to a pop-up ad or spam. (The user reviews that ranked this particular service provider as #1 were listed on a site owned by the spyware software company, and the reviews were never real.)

2. Remember that songwriters and performers want to get paid for their songs. If a service is offering unlimited downloads to your PC to burn CD's, these artist are usually not getting paid. Bigger name services allow unlimited download to MP3 players to be used by one listener only. If you see that newest top 40 hit available for free download to your PC, beware. You may be participating in piracy, a crime punishable with jail time or hefty fines.

3. Read the fine print. All reputable service providers should offer a "try it and see" period to test the waters. If a company states that they don't offer refunds under any circumstances or charge a fee to reimburse you for unused membership fees, get away fast!

Almost everyone has heard about the massive crack down on Internet music piracy that has been occurring over the past few years. Napster was taken down (although it has now returned as a pay service), other file sharing programs now require users to pay for a license and the RIAA and other similar organizations are doing their best to hunt down copyright offenders and put an end to their crime sprees. The consumers on the other hand argue that their actions hurt nobody, that there is no damage done to anyone by their not buying an album. I'm not here to argue the pros and cons. Basically it's not worth it, as neither side of the argument will ever see the opposition's point of view. What I'd like to do is take a look at the completely free and legal alternative to 'stealing' music. Those wonderfully talented musicians who are willing to put their creations online to download for free, solely for the joy of spreading their creations to the masses.

Free music is surprisingly easy to come by, even music by famous bands. Sometimes it needs to be 'streamed' from the Internet, meaning that you can only listen to a song while you're online, but with the ever-growing popularity of broadband Internet this is really no longer a problem. Sites such as MP3.com and purevolume.com provide free music by almost any band you can think of, although there is a large amount of it that has to be streamed and not downloaded. A search for 'free legal MP3 downloads' will reveal a huge number of pages to visit.

For something specific, try visiting the artist's website, or the site of their record label. These will often offer a few sample tracks to download for free. It's not quite as convenient as having access to every song that you want, but it's not a bad alternative.

A fairly major contributor to the online music scene is the remixer. These people take other tunes and redo them, often in a techno style because one person can do this competently. People now go and grab the main tune line from an old favourite and fill it out, making real the work our imaginations used to do for us to turn the single tone melodies into orchestral masterpieces. Young people today have somany ways to spend their free time, it sure could be overwhelming. When I was around sixteen I spent a lot of time with my friends, and I was always making time to watch music videos. Really, most of my time spent with friends was dedicated to MTV. If we weren't viewing the station we were talking about what we saw or what we would like to watch next. Looking back now I can't believe I wasted so much time, but then again, it made me happy so I believe it was important. In any case, at that moment in my life I could not envisage not watching MTV all the time, and now I could not tell you where it is on my cable lineup.

My friends and I could watch music videos so much that we could tell you every tiny thing that happened in the video. It was the time of the eighties hair bands, and there was at least one guy in every group that we were so much in love with, though it was rarely the same guy for each of us. We would watch music videos far into the night, and would eagerly await a new release. Thinking back, I recognize there are worse things I could have been doing with my time.

Although I do not watch music videos on MTV any longer, my boyfriend turns on some videos on occasion. We might watch some new material, and we could also see music videos from when we were teenagers. It is almost embarrassing to watch them today, as it reminds me of how crazy I was about it. I look at the guys that I thought were so attractive back then, and I do not understand what I saw in them. If it is up to me, I never watch music videos any longer, but if they are on and something good comes on I don't mind going down memory lane.

For the teenagers of today, there exist a lot of methods to look at music videos. MTV is still there, though I think it is a joke now. It is almost a parody of itself. If you are sick of the MTV programming like I am, you can find another great place to watch music videos. Many singers now put their videos up online so that you can watch them there.
